In any industry, longevity in roles has always been a hallmark of professionalism. It shows you’ve invested time, built trust, and contributed meaningfully to a business. Staying for a substantial period demonstrates to future employers that you’re capable of commitment, consistency, and perseverance.
But is moving on quickly always a red flag?
Not necessarily. Sometimes, leaving can mean you recognise when something isn’t right for you – that you’re striving for a better fit. Walking away from a role that doesn’t align with your values doesn’t make you unreliable.
If you’re leaving multiple roles within a year and a pattern begins to emerge, it can raise questions, not because change is bad, but because it might suggest restlessness, avoidance of challenge, or a lack of clarity about your career path. But leaving a role for good reason, to grow, to protect your wellbeing, or to find the right fit, shows maturity and confidence. It’s about knowing your worth and prioritising long-term success over short-term comfort.
As recruiters, we’ve always valued loyalty and service. However, since Covid, there has been a shift, and people aren’t sticking around like they used to. The industry has changed; people want balance, purpose, and growth, not just a payslip. That’s why – and we’ve mentioned this before – employers must remember the interview process must be a two-way street.
Many businesses still run “trial shifts,” but we prefer to call them “taster sessions.” Because it’s not just about the employer seeing how someone fits into their world, it’s equally about the candidate deciding if that world fits them. This mindset shift matters. The best placements happen when both sides choose each other for the right reasons.
Ideally, you want to find a business you can stay with for two to three years, one that challenges you, develops you, and sets you up for your next step. And if it continues to evolve alongside you? Even better.
Longevity still matters. But so does knowing when to move on. The professionals thriving in hospitality today are the ones who understand both commitment with purpose and change with clarity.
