In hospitality, longevity has long been seen as a marker of professionalism. It shows you’ve built something, understood a business, and added value. Staying for a meaningful period tells future employers you’re capable of commitment, consistency, and seeing things through.
But we do see that moving on isn’t always a red flag.
Sometimes, it’s actually a sign of self-awareness. It can mean you know when something isn’t right, that you’re striving for better, or that you won’t compromise on values. Because it’s no secret: there are some not-so-great employers in hospitality. Walking away from one doesn’t make you unreliable; it makes you discerning.
The key lies in intention. If you’re leaving every few months, and a pattern of this starts to emerge, it can look like you are restless, avoiding growth, or are exiting before challenges arise. If you are leaving jobs without good reason, it can suggest you’re not ready for the role, or perhaps even in the wrong niche (or industry entirely). But stepping away from roles that didn’t align with your goals, values, or potential isn’t flightiness. It’s knowing your worth and prioritising your career and happiness.
As recruiters, we’ve always valued longevity and service, and post-COVID, they’re rarer than ever. We still look closely at loyalty and reasons for leaving, but we’re also realistic. The industry has changed. People want balance, purpose, and growth, not just a job.
That’s why the interview process must be a two-way street. Many businesses now offer a “trial shift,” but we prefer to frame it as a “taster session”. It’s not just for the employer to see how a candidate fits into their world; it’s also for the candidate to decide if that world fits them. A view many understand now.
Ideally, you want to find somewhere you can stay for two to three years: a business that develops you, challenges you, and prepares you for your next step, or even keeps you longer by evolving with you.
Longevity still matters. But so does knowing when to move on. The professionals who thrive in today’s hospitality world are the ones who understand both.
